STRENGTHENING UBI DEVELOPMENT IN BOHOL

The Investment and Development Technical Working Group (ID-TWG) of the Bohol Ubi Board (BUB) has been actively spearheading initiatives to bolster the development of ubi (purple yam) in the province. These efforts align with Provincial Ordinance 2023-014, also known as the Ubi Development Framework, which aims to enhance the ubi industry and promote its economic significance. The Bohol Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office (BEDIPO) leads the ID-TWG along with its members — DTI, DA-ATI7, DOST, DOLE, BCCI, and the Bohol Purple Women.

Last July 30, 2024, Ubi Processors from the different municipalities in Bohol gathered at the Ceremonial Hall of the New Provincial Capitol Building to participate in the Food Safety Training for Bohol Ubi Processors. This initiative is designed to equip participants with knowledge of food safety protocols, thereby reducing the incidence of foodborne diseases and ensuring the integrity of food handling, preparation, and storage processes. Ms. Doris Isabel Racho, Information Officer II of DA-ATI7 and one of the members of the Bohol Food Safety Team, was the resource person during the said training.

Building on this momentum, the ID-TWG, in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), recently concluded a three-day Geographical Indication (GI) Orientation Workshop from August 14 to 16, 2024. The activity aims to provide information to ubi stakeholders including the LGUs, partner agencies and offices on the salient features of GI rules and regulations, practical steps for creating a GI and collective mark, and enhance awareness and capacity related to origin-based branding.

Highlights of the three-day event include the Origin-Based Branding Seminar by the IPOPHL’s Documentation, Information, and Technology Transfer Bureau led by DITTB Director Jarvis Alindogan, and its Bureau of Trademarks led by Atty. Irma Vera Morcillo, IP Rights Specialist V (Day1); field visit to ubi kinampay farms in Corella and Carmen (Day 2); and the GI documentation workshop (Day 3).

This collective effort underscores our commitment to continually uphold the quality and consumer trust in Bohol’s ubi products, fostering a culture of safety and quality that resonates throughout the industry.
